My Older Brother Passed Away

My older Brother JIm passed away this past Tuesday of heart failure. He had been ill for a long while with only 4% kidney function for around 2 years now. The past couple of months he had been so sick, and not able to keep food down that he missed several dialysis treatments. I think it was the last straw for his body to take. He was finally admitted to the hospital in Rochester, NY last weekend. His heart stopped around 5 AM EST on Tuesday, and they never were able to get it restarted.

Please keep his wife Luann in your thoughts and prayers as Jim's death was totally unexpected so soon. She is now left holding the bag trying to straighten out her life on her own from now on. Needless to say I haven't much been in the mood for any kind of music ripping lately. Jim was cremated yesterday, and his wife will take his ashes with her back to PA where she's from. Thanks all!

I'm going to start doing my sharing here again. I'm going to try and be a good boy and share only OOP stuff. So there won't be as many shares as in the past. I'm not going to go back and re-share anything that isn't OOP either. I liked the Forum setup a lot, but it just got too much to keep track of, and I'm not able to sit at my PC as much any more now that my DJD in my left knee has worsened. Verne Langdon (1941 - 2011):

Born in Oakland, California, Langdon was known in cult monster mask circles as the creative force behind the Don Post Studios "Calendar Masks". He was also the creator of the most sought-after collector's mask, "The Zombie", and was creator-producer of the cult classic Decca LP An Evening With Boris Karloff And His Friends. With Jay Stein and Terry Winnick he created The Land Of A Thousand Faces Makeup Show in 1975 and the Castle Dracula horror show in 1980 for Universal Studios Tour, Hollywood, California. He has produced, written, performed and recorded thirty one albums for two record labels, Electric Lemon Record Co., and Dejavu Record Company. His most recent album was released on March 16, 2009, Jonathan Winters - A Very Special Time. The nineteen track, spoken word album, featured memorial tracks with all music composed by Verne Langdon.

Langdon was a member of American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. He was a special guest of the Monsterpalooza – The Art of Monsters on April 9, 2010, in The Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel in Burbank, California.

Verne Langdon was born in Oakland, California to a musical family; his mother was staff First Cellist
with NBC radio in San Francisco, his father played violin, and to complete the musical history, Verne's
uncle was famed jazz cornetist, bandleader Ernest Loring "Red" Nichols (Red Nichols and The Five Pennies).

By age two Verne was climbing up on the piano bench and duplicating melodies; by age 12 he was studying
classical piano with Thomas Ryan, then head of the Music Department at San Jose State University.

When it became obvious to Ryan that Verne's talent for improvising and creating his own melodies was
holding the young artist back, Verne's parents were advised to put an end to formal lessons and give his gift free reign.

By fourteen, Verne Langdon was working for both of San Jose (California's) major music stores, demonstrating pianos and organs, where noted
keyboard musician Korla Pandit heard Verne perform, and invited him to study music and theory. Verne studied with Pandit for several years, learning
and perfecting the simultaneous Hammond organ/grand piano techniques originated by Pandit on radio, most notably the "Chandu the Magician" radio
soap opera (1948 revival).

Verne soon thereafter embarked on a successful career in radio, first with a weekly live broadcast organ music show (1959), then as a co-host for the
prototype of the Coca-Cola Hi-Fi Club (1959-1960), and finally with his own 4-hour AM and 4-hr PM radio show, 6 mornings and nights per week,
on 50000 watt radio station KLOK-AM in the San Francisco Bay Area(1960-1962).

From 1967, when he and collaborator Milt Larsen produced "An Evening With Boris Karloff And His Friends" for Decca Records, to the present, he
has written, produced or been featured Artist for fifteen LP albums, two forty-five single releases, ranging from theatre organ to harpsichord, comedy

MAD MONSTER PARTY DVD SOUNDTRACK:

This is a long one so I've split it up into separate files to keep the size down a little. It's still going to be almost 140 MB total. I remember the first time this was shown on TV. Baron Von Frankenstein, voiced by the legendary Boris Karloff, holds a special convention of The Worldwide Organization Of Monsters to discuss his retirement. When he announces that his successor will be his nerd nephew Felix, the world's major monsters are mortified. Now The Creature's Bride (voiced by Phyllis Diller), Count Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde and more must all scramble to steal the Baron's ultimate secret during one wild party packed with cool monster music and outrageous monster madness!

Besides Phyllis Diller and Boris Karloff all the other male voices were done by Allen Swift who had been on the Howdy Doody Show, and had done many of the voices for the "Underdog" show. The only other voice heard is from Gale Garnett who does the voice of Francesca. She also sings all of the Francesca songs. Her one big hit as a singer was "We'll Sing In The Sunshine" in the 1960's. My Halloween Recordings Thus Far

I just thought I would do like Jason at Scar Stuff did before creating his blog. He had a webpage that showed all of the Halloween recordings that he had acquired over the decades. Well here's cover scans of all of mine. Maybe it will help you hunt some of these down for yourselves like Jason's website and blog influenced me to buy them (it's a work in progress so I'll be posting more images everyday until I have them all posted). BTW - to you money grubbing, musi sharing site haters - if it hadn't been for several Music Sharing Blogs like Jason's Scar Stuff I would have never known about 90% of these recordings that I've purchased since 1995. Have any of my purchases helped the original artists? No of course not because 90% of these recordings are only available for sale on the after market. So my buying them or sharing them out for free has nothing to do with hurting any original artist does it?

You can find this LP for sale HERE. This is one of the rarest, most impossible to find Spoken Word LPs. It features David McCallum (from Man From U.N.C.L.E.), and Carole Shelley reading 4 passages from Bram Stoker's "Dracula". The LP and Cover are in Near Mint condition. Yes it seems I am asking a lot for the LP, but it is less than what I paid for it. That's how rare the LP is. It is time for me to pass it on to another however. Thanks!

Here's a collection of the songs that Vince Guaraldi wrote for the Charlie Brown cartoons. He can be heard here playing the piano and electric harpsichord. Vince is backed-up by Carl Burnett on drums, Stanley Gilbert on bass, and Eddie Duran on electric guitar. Oh, Good Grief! isn't Vince Guaraldi's classic piano-trio recordings of his "Peanuts" favorites--for those, try the soundtrack to A Boy Named Charlie Brown. But it is a 1968 "re-imagining" of several of those favorites. The sound is unfamiliar but the groove is unmistakably Guaraldi's, and it'll grow on you after your ear adjusts. For purists, the "Great Pumpkin Waltz" and "Rain, Rain Go Away" are a return to Guaraldi's trademark acoustic lyricism.

Jason had posted his LP of the first compilation of Scary Stories by George S. Irving HERE. Someone asked me recently if I had anymore of these stories, and I remembered I did have an old cassette of the stories from Book 3 by Irving, (the book cover of which is posted above). So I will be working this week on getting it uploaded to my PC to share it here. The cassette had no liner with it when I got it, so I have no clue what that looked like. I do know that it contains every story from the book, unlike the first compilation that Jason posted. There is however an Audio CD box set available on Amazon that contains almost every story from all 3 books. I just ordered one of them for myself.

This 11 minute, 7 Inch 33 rpm record comes off more like a Promo for the movie than an actual Soundtrack record. There is a Colpix full 12 inch soundtrack to the movie on record number CP-472/SCP-472, but I've yet to see it anywhere for sale. Anyone have it?

Super Snooper gets a call of a loud party out at 999 Shady Lane. They go to investigate only to find out the party is going on at a house occupied by The Gruesome Family (of Flintstones fame). Voices on this one are Paul Frees and June Foray. The main song, used throughout the LP, is called Monster Shindig. Lead vocals are by Danny Hutton. Little snippets of this song can be heard on many of the other HB Records whenever one of the characters turns on a radio. This song can be heard playing until a newsman breaks in with an announcement.

"Hi. Whoever said that lightning never strikes twice in the same place never met Fess Parker. The Texas actor was all the rage in 1954 as American frontier hero Davy Crockett, thanks to ABC-TV's "Disneyland" TV series. The five "Davy Crockett" installments started an unprecedented craze, with kids by the millions sporting coonskin caps and singing the famous theme song. Well, a full decade later, Fess didn't even have to change his clothes to do it all over again. When NBC launched "Daniel Boone" in 1964, the coonskin cap mania picked up again without missing a beat. Parker was born to play these two pioneers. He seemed larger than life in both roles. As Davy Crockett, he would outwit wild bears by "grinning" them into remission. As Daniel Boone, he could split a mighty oak tree with his hatchet. Fess Parker elevated these two historical figures into superhero status. I for one was glued to the TV set each week for "Daniel Boone" through its entire run from 1964-1970. This RCA album is the closest thing to a soundtrack album that came out, and the only place that you'll hear Fess singing both famous themes himself! The LP opens with the "Daniel Boone" theme and then launches into eleven more songs about such great American heroes as Jim Bowie, Abe Lincoln, and Kit Carson among others. The great TV composer Lionel Newman, with Vera Matson, wrote the "Daniel Boone" theme song. I've added two bonus versions of this classic TV theme from my VHS tapes, the original 1964 version and a revamped faster version from the later color seasons. This is yet another Alvin Schwartz book this time on tape. It contains Word-For-Word narration of the book with music and sound effects. I only offer Side 1 of the tape here so far. Side 1 has turn-the-page signals at the end of each story. Side 2 is uninterruppted reading of each story. There's no credit anywhere I can find as to the narrator here, but it sounds a lot like George S. Irving on this one as well. Eventually I will put up Side 2, and perhaps scans of each page of the book.

This is the second Richard Taylor LP in the 4 (or 5) Part Series Of Edgar Allan Poe Narrations. This one is called "Horror" and features only one Poe story "The Black Cat". I've searched high and low for more info on these LPs without success. It is my understanding these could be found in the back of Monsters Of Filmland Magazine. I've noticed however that Jason's Richard Taylor LPs are from Major Records. The 3 that I have all came in the same cover (as seen on top above) with the different names stamped in the white block at the top left corner of the front cover. They all came with this same drawing on the front. Also the 3 I have were put out by Random Records. All 3 also have the same back cover as the one I show above. Maybe all of you out there can come up with some more info on these for us. I hope you enjoy them all.

This 1959 LP features cover art by Jack Davis of Mad Magazine. He also did many other LP covers such as Gene Moss" "Dracula's Greatest Hits, and Zacherley's "Monster Mash Party." The songs are sung by Hans Conreid and Alice Pearce. Conried's inimitable growl and impeccable diction were perfectly suited for portraying comic villains and other mock-sinister or cranky types, such as Captain Hook (and Mr. Darling) in Walt Disney's Peter Pan and the Grinch from Dr. Seuss' Grinch Night.
Conried also was a cast member of The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, voicing the character of Snidely Whiplash in the Dudley Do-Right shorts. He was well known as the Williams family patriarch, Uncle Tonoose, on the sitcom Make Room for Daddy.

Alice Pearce began working in nightclubs as a comedian and was cast in the Broadway production of On The Town. Gene Kelly was so impressed by her that she became the only cast member to be included in the film version in 1949. Her comedic performance was well received by critics and public alike, and she was given her own television variety show. More movie roles followed, and she made appearances on Broadway, where she met her husband director Paul Davis during a production of Bells Are Ringing. In 1964 she joined the cast of the television series Bewitched. As the nagging and nosy neighbor, Gladys Kravitz, Pearce's scenes were almost entirely reactions to acts of witchcraft she had witnessed at the house across the street. Her hysterical accusations against Samantha, played by Elizabeth Montgomery, and the disbelief of her husband Abner.

Here's another request from one of our readers. "Despite his long and prolific career as a performer, arranger, and composer, Milton Delugg's best-remembered accomplishments will be his score for the cult kiddie movie, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, which starred a juvenile Pia Zadora, and his bandleading on Chuck Barris' notorious game show, "The Gong Show."
Delugg studied piano, accordion, and composition at Los Angeles City College and with the legendary teacher Tibor Serly in New York City. He worked steadily in radio orchestras and stage bands while in school, and he joined the Matty Malneck Orchestra fulltime in 1938. After serving in the Army Air Corps in World War Two, he became a freelance arranger and conductor, working with songwriters such as Frank Loesser and Morey Amsterdam and singers such as Al Jolson.
He also worked in radio and television on such varied assignments as "The Fred Allen Show" and the Junior Miss beauty pageant, for which he composed the theme. By the early 1960s, he had an excellent reputation in the industry for reliability and dependability. In 1966, when Skitch Henderson left NBC's "Tonight Show with Jack Paar," Delugg took over as bandleader, and recorded an album for RCA with the band. His tenure was short, though, and within a year or so Johnny Carson replace him with the more colorful (but less contentious) Doc Severinsen.
Delugg composed the score for the 1964 B-minus movie, "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians," as well as for the 1966 U.S.-dubbed version of a Japanese animated movie called, "Gulliver's Travels Beyond the Moon." Delugg also composed and conducted incidental music for a series of childrens recordings of tales by the Brothers Grimm produced by RCA and Golden Books around 1966-67.
Somewhere in the haze of the 1970s, "Dating Game" impresario Chuck Barris hired Delugg to appear on stage leading "Milton Delugg and the Band with a Thug" on his "Gong Show" talent contest show. The two had first bumped elbows when Delugg produced Decca's entry into the Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass wannabe competition, the Trumpets Ole, and Barris provided an original tune, "Love Sickness" to the album (along with his theme to "The Newlywed Game"). Delugg also contributed the score to the long-forgotten 1980 movie take-off from the "Gong Show." Although he's cut back on his schedule quite a bit, he's still on the go, and can be heard each Thanksgiving as the Musical Director for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Delugg never let his accordion skills grow rusty, and space age pop fans will enjoy his 1967 album, "Accordion My Way--Ole!," which features an effervescent Milton on the cover, sporting an Amish farmer beard and a toreador hat. Got this from a member of my Mostly Ghostly Music Forum named lostsoulmusic who asked me to share it with everyone. So here it is:
Troll Read-Along Books "The Headless Horseman Of Sleepy Hollow"

This isn't a Halloween related LP, but it is one of my favorites, and hardest to come by. As far as I know it is the only full-length recording ever done by Paul Frees. Although he did share parts of other recordings, this one is ALL him. On this LP Frees sings several popular hit songs as he felt they would sound if the many celebritites he impersonates had ever actually recorded these songs. Voices such as Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Peter Lorre, Clarke Gable and Humprey Bogart to name a few.
"You know the late Paul Frees. Even if you don't know his name, you know Boris Badenov from "The Bullwinkle Show", Professor Ludwig von Drake from "The Wonderful World of Disney", the Pillsbury Doughboy from way back (he's now done by the little guy in the Cheer ads), any number of the pirates at Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean", and especially if you're slanted towards dementia, the hilarious Peter Lorre impersonation in Spike Jones' classic "My Old Flame". Frees was one of the busiest radio and TV voice actors in history, creating zany characters and impersonating many top stars. Round about 1970 he went in with pop producer Artie Butler (of Kama Sutra productions) and a full complement of musicians and background singers, and they created this wonderful spotlight on Frees' talents.
All of the selections on the album somewhat resemble their original counterparts musically, with just a bit of streamlining for the "adult folk". Notable is his rendition of Karloff doing "The Look of Love" in his spooky but smooth style, he even sings some of it (scary thought in itself eh?)...Perhaps "Hey Jude" will be nostalgic to Demented listeners, as he pretty much does the Lorre character as he did in "My Old Flame", with plenty of rambling on at the end about this & that as he did about "Manny, Moe, Jack..." Like thousands of other kids my age in 1967 I had the single to Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron. I had never heard this LP from the Royal Guardsmen until i acquired this one last year off ebay.
Side 1 of the LP is a drama involving all three of the Snoopy record singles. Side 2 is a mixture of love songs, airplane songs and Christmas songs. This copy was a bit choppy in a few spots, but I've tried to edit the skips out as best I could. I hope you enjoy it.

This is a long one so I've split it up into separate files to keep the size down a little. It's still going to be almost 140 MB total. I remember the first time this was shown on TV. Baron Von Frankenstein, voiced by the legendary Boris Karloff, holds a special convention of The Worldwide Organization Of Monsters to discuss his retirement. When he announces that his successor will be his nerd nephew Felix, the world's major monsters are mortified. Now The Creature's Bride (voiced by Phyllis Diller), Count Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde and more must all scramble to steal the Baron's ultimate secret during one wild party packed with cool monster music and outrageous monster madness!

Besides Phyllis Diller and Boris Karloff all the other male voices were done by Allen Swift who had been on the Howdy Doody Show, and had done many of the voices for the "Underdog" show. The only other voice heard is from Gale Garnett who does the voice of Francesca. She also sings all of the Francesca songs. Her one big hit as a singer was "We'll Sing In The Sunshine" in the 1960's. The Grinch has successfully displaced Ebeneezer Scrooge as the spirit of anti-Christmas for today's audience. And there are similarities. Just as Tiny Tim was a strong factor in Ebeneezer's redemption, the children are a strong factor in the Grinch's redemption.

It's a pleasure to be able to hear the great Boris Karloff narration, along with the songs, and then afterwards to again hear the songs reprised.

Of course, this is a short CD, just barely 30 minutes in length. One must realize that while the program was supposed to be a half hour long, nearly a third of the time was used for toy advertisements. The irony of it all, a beautiful story telling us that the joy of Christmas is in the spirit of Christmas, not in the getting toys is aired for the purpose of selling overpriced and non-imaginative toys.

Spike Jones in Stereo (also known as Spike Jones in Hi-Fi and A Spooktacular in Screaming Sound) (1959) is a horror-comedy album by musical-satirist Spike Jones. Unlike his previous recordings, which make fun of genres such as Christmas and classical music, Spike Jones in Stereo sends-up everything from horror movies to the hit T.V show This is Your Life, which Jones pokes fun at in the track "This is Your Death".
Making a notable guest appearance on the album is Paul Frees, who plays the voice of Dracula, Professor Lud Wig Van Drake and one of the heads on the two headed monster. Other recognisable voices such as Loulie Jean Norman (as Vampira), Thurl Ravenscroft, and George Rock (the voice on Jones's only number one hit "All I Want for Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth)") also give stand out performances, bringing to life Jones’s already spooktacular music.
Most of the tracks on Spike Jones in Stereo do not appear on his many compilation albums ("I Only Have Eyes For You" and "My Old Flame" being the only two), but it’s still considered among his finest post City-Slickers efforts.

Here's one of the first recordings I ever offered on my website HERE.

This was an LP of parody songs done by Gene Moss who was a comic/character actor, mimic, scriptwriter and puppeteer who hosted one of Los Angeles' most popular kids TV comedy shows.
Mr. Moss hosted "Shrimpenstein" weekday evenings on KJH (now KCAL) Ch. 9 during the late 1960's. Co-starring in the series was comedy scribe Jim Thurman (who would go on to greater fame as one of the writers on "Mash").
Mr. Moss' Dr. Von Schtick was pelted with cream pies, dealt with smart-alecky monster puppets and made references to the Marvel Superheroes cartoons that he screened on his show as "another Marvel mediocrity" or "one of those TV cartoons that doesn't move. The LP came with 15 Monster Cards done by the great artist Jack Davis.

This compilation of 50's and 60's Rock Horror music was put together recently by Ace Records, and features an awesome cover by Mitch O'Connell. I would have included the graphics, but the insert is 20 pages long. Eventually I will get this put up on a web page, and include all of the graphics that come with the CD. I see that Ace just came out with a new CD which looks interesting called "Dead! Grim Reaper's Greatest Hits".

I just got the Fat Albert Halloween Special DVD. I decided to share the soundtrack in all of its crystal clear DVD greatness. It is a little longer than Fat Albert Halloween LP by Kid Stuff that Jason shared at his Scar Stuff Blog. I included the opening and closing credits soundtrack as well which I don't believe they did on the LP. So here it is for you to enjoy!

If the album art hasn't already given it away, the track listing should--this is another of Beach Boy associate Gary Usher's numerous studio concoctions, this time slanted towards the early-1960s horror-spoof movie and TV craze that reached its zenith with shows like THE MUNSTERS and THE ADDAMS FAMILY. Usher masterfully combines surf and schlock with titles like "Little Old Lady From Transylvania" and "Be True to Your Ghoul," while his circle of L.A. session players, among them soon-to-be music legends like the guitarist and singer Glen Campbell and the drummer Hal Blaine, strut their anonymous, early-'60s stuff.

This amazing album sports 6 marvelous Richie Podolor instrumentals. Some have appeared from other sessions under other titles as the Devons, etc. Many of Podolor's studio tracks rank among the very best of the genre. The album was recorded in October, 1964 at Capitol in Hollywood. Podolor arranged his own instro tracks on the fly, and could generally lay down six intros in one three hour session, often from melodies Richie had "lying around."

Arranged and produced by Ralph Stein. The sound effects were done by Myst-A-Rama / Cricketone Chorus And Orchestra.

Sleepy Hollow is the Washington Irving story of a stuffy schoolmaster and his ability to win the love of the fair Katrina from the brutish Brom Van Brunt. Many fans will see a resemblance to Disney's masterpiece created some 40 years later, Beauty and the Beast, in style and story. The end is still scary enough to send youngsters under the table. Bing Crosby supplies the narration, character voices, and songs. The exaggeration of Ichabod's skinny frame and his slumping horse is a glorious example of the Disney style.
I present here the soundtrack to the Ichabod Half of this DVD narrated by Bing Crosby. This includes the songs "Ichabod", "Katrina", and "The Headless Horseman" - performed by Bing Crosby and the Rhythmaires.
